For companies that are not ready to switch to the cloud, Microsoft still offers an on-premises version: Dynamics NAV 2018. However, you will not have access to the Business Application Platform in this case. Without the cloud, you will be unable to integrate the data from these tools seamlessly, which would result in fewer insights into your business processes.

If you switch from an older version of Microsoft Dynamics, there are two possible upgrade paths.
A reimplementation is a relatively smooth process. The more recent the version of Dynamics AX, NAV or CRM, the smoother the transition will be. The core of the business platform is maintained, but revamped. Most business processes can be moved 1-to-1, which allows for a lot of automation. Only new features or customizations have to be considered separately.
