SAP ECC maintenance changes in 2027: what pharma leaders should decide now

Thomas Van Dorpe

Thomas Van Dorpe

October 26, 2026

For pharmaceutical companies running SAP ECC, December 2027 is approaching fast: that is when mainstream support ends for the most recent enhancement packages. Older versions, ECC 6.0 with no enhancement package or with packages 1 through 5, already lost that support in December 2025. Extended maintenance can stretch to 2030, at a cost, and with limits. Either way, every company still on SAP ECC will need to decide what comes next.

In-blog visual · SAP ECC support timeline (blog 2)@1x

Many organizations have already started discussing migration paths, project timelines, and resource planning, and many have not: Gartner projects that nearly half of SAP's ECC customers will still be running the legacy system by 2027. But before asking how to migrate, pharma companies should ask a more important question: is our current ERP landscape still the right foundation for the future of our business?

Because SAP ECC End of Support is not just a technology milestone. Much of that landscape was built at a time when SAP was the default choice for a business running complex, regulated operations. That default no longer holds the way it once did, which makes this deadline a rare opportunity to step back and reassess an ERP landscape that has been evolving over decades.

The pressure is real, but so is the opportunity

ERP decisions in pharma are rarely simple. Regulators require every process to be validated, quality requirements run through every part of the business, integrations have accumulated over time, and acquisitions have introduced additional complexity. What may look like a straightforward upgrade on paper often becomes a multi-year transformation program.

The SAP ECC deadline is as much a strategic question as it is a technical one. The organizations that benefit most from this moment will be the ones willing to slow down: to evaluate where the business is heading and confirm the ERP platform can support that future.

Why pharma faces a different challenge

In many industries, an ERP migration is largely a technology project. In pharma, it is a regulatory and quality program that happens to involve new software. ERP systems sit at the heart of regulated processes under FDA 21 CFR Part 11, EMA Annex 11, and GAMP 5. Any significant change can trigger validation activities, testing, documentation requirements, and compliance reviews. Data integrity, traceability, and audit readiness all need to be maintained throughout the transition.

That reality is reflected in migration timelines. Large-scale, multi-site pharma ERP transformations routinely stretch well beyond a year, and a substantial share of that time goes toward GxP validation and revalidation rather than the technology migration itself. This is one of the reasons many organizations feel pressure today. Even though 2027 may still seem some distance away, large-scale ERP programs require preparation well in advance.

Do not rebuild yesterday's ERP

When organizations are under deadline pressure, the focus often shifts toward execution. Questions like how fast to move, which migration approach to choose, and how much budget to allocate are important, but they are not the first ones to ask. The first question should be whether the current ERP landscape still reflects the needs of the business.

Many pharma ERP environments have grown organically over time. Organizations added new entities, introduced new processes, built customizations to solve specific challenges, and connected systems as they evolved. What started as a logical ERP architecture often becomes a collection of historical decisions. The cost of maintaining that complexity is not always visible. IT teams spend time supporting customizations that no longer create business value. Integrations require increasing effort to maintain. Knowledge becomes concentrated in a small number of specialists approaching retirement or moving into other roles. Every change takes longer, every acquisition becomes harder to integrate, and every new digital initiative has to work around decisions made years ago. These costs rarely appear as a separate budget line, but they can have a significant impact on the organization's ability to adapt and innovate. Simply recreating that environment in a new system risks bringing the same complexity, technical debt, and inefficiencies forward for another decade.

The ERP market has changed

When many pharma companies originally selected SAP, the market looked very different. Today, organizations have more options. Cloud-native ERP platforms have matured. Integration capabilities have improved. Data, AI, automation, and collaboration are increasingly becoming part of the ERP discussion. Five years ago, ERP discussions were primarily about finance, supply chain, and manufacturing processes. Today, you should also evaluate how your ERP platform supports data-driven decision making, AI initiatives, automation, acquisitions, and future digital transformation programs. The question has moved beyond which ERP system best supports operations, toward which platform best supports the organization's broader business and technology strategy.

For companies already invested in Microsoft technologies, Microsoft Dynamics 365 has become an increasingly relevant option to evaluate alongside more traditional migration paths. Microsoft's Dynamics 365 ERP MCP server, for example, now enables AI agents to securely access ERP data and execute business actions independently with a clear audit trail, a capability most legacy ERP roadmaps aren't built around. Not every SAP ECC customer needs to replace SAP, but every one of them should make that choice deliberately, rather than defaulting to the most familiar option.

What should pharma organizations evaluate now?

Before committing to a migration path, it is worth stepping back and looking at the bigger picture. Questions worth asking include:

  • Which processes truly differentiate our business, and where do we benefit instead from standardization?
  • How much customization do we want to carry into the future?
  • How easily can our current ERP landscape support acquisitions and growth?
  • Does our architecture support the increasing importance of data, AI, and automation?
  • Are we solving a support deadline, or are we building an ERP foundation for the next ten years?

The answers will differ from one organization to another. Some companies will conclude that SAP S/4HANA is the right destination. Others may decide a different ERP platform is a better fit for their future ambitions. The important thing is that the decision starts with business strategy, not with a deadline.

Do not let the deadline decide for you

The end of SAP ECC support creates urgency. There is no avoiding that. But urgency should not determine strategy. For pharmaceutical organizations, any ERP transition will require significant effort, investment, and validation work. That is precisely why this moment deserves careful consideration.

What matters most is which ERP landscape will best support compliance, operational excellence, growth, and innovation over the next decade, and that is a conversation worth having before the clock runs out.
