In a time when technology advances at incredible speed, real transformation doesn’t begin with software. It starts with people, and with partners who understand that change is shaped as much by mindset as by tools. That shared belief defines the collaboration between DEME, a leading global contractor in offshore energy, dredging, marine infrastructure, and environmental remediation, and Cegeka.
Empowering People to Embrace AI
When DEME set out to explore the potential of Microsoft 365 Copilot, it wasn’t about deploying a new productivity feature. The goal was to support employees in working more efficiently, thinking creatively, and making AI a natural part of their daily habits. From day one, Cegeka helped turn that ambition into reality through a considered adoption and change-management approach, rather than focusing on technology alone.
“Simply providing Copilot licenses is just the beginning,” says Arne De Reys, Business Analyst at DEME. “The real work starts after that, when people begin to discover, adopt, and embrace new ways of working. That’s where adoption and change management make the difference between a rollout and a true success story. And that’s exactly where Cegeka stood out.”
A Movement That Started Small
What began with a pilot group of 300 motivated volunteers quickly gained momentum across the organization. DEME and Cegeka launched an Early Adopter Program featuring kick-off sessions and regular “Ask Me Anything” moments. Alongside this, Cegeka supported the establishment of a Copilot Center of Excellence to ensure governance, clear communication, and ongoing learning.
The Spark of Community
The biggest catalyst for change came from the growing Copilot community. Webinars, Copilot Cafés, one-on-one coaching, and a Copilot Community Day and Week created informal spaces where colleagues shared experiences, learned from each other, and celebrated progress.
As one participant said, “My work feels lighter and more efficient. I have more time to focus on what really matters.”
Digital Ambassadors Community
To reinforce that sense of shared learning, DEME introduced a digital ambassador network. These champions support colleagues across departments, spreading adoption through hands-on help and peer-to-peer guidance. DEME also appointed a dedicated community manager to connect people, share internal success stories, and equip ambassadors with the tools they need to support others.
“We truly appreciate how DEME doesn’t just talk about change, they act on it,” says Kristof Lanckman, User Adoption & Digital Wellbeing Consultant from Cegeka. “By recognizing the importance of community building and even appointing a dedicated community manager, they’ve shown what ‘Shaping Digital Together’ really means in practice.”
This approach shifted adoption from a traditional top-down push to a bottom-up movement powered by enthusiasm and trust.
Insights That Keep Raising the Bar
By combining technology with strong engagement and structured support, DEME achieved impressive usage levels. More than 750 employees now rely on Copilot daily, particularly in Outlook, Teams, Chat, and Word.
Viva Insights provides visibility into how employees collaborate and where Copilot delivers the most value. This data gives both DEME and Cegeka the clarity to adjust their approach, strengthen adoption, and continuously drive impact.
From Adoption to Sustainable Impact
Innovation has long been embedded in DEME’s DNA, and this project reflects that entrepreneurial spirit. The collaboration with Cegeka wasn’t about switching on AI. It was about creating a culture where employees feel confident trying new things and improving their workflow.
Lasting adoption requires clear communication, strong sponsorship, and ongoing support. With dedicated coaching, relevant content, and a vibrant community behind it, Copilot became more than a new feature. It is now part of how DEME works.
The journey continues to evolve, supported by data and real feedback from employees. The foundation is firmly in place: transformation succeeds when people feel empowered to embrace it.
