Cosmin Pricochi's story in Networking

Hi Cosmin! First, tell us what drew you to a career in IT.
You should know that I’m from a small town in the poorest county in Romania, where we didn’t have the opportunities that others had in cities like Bucharest. For most students who wanted to go to university, there were just a few options: doctor, lawyer, or IT engineer. Considering my background and affinities, I chose a career in IT. At that time, we didn’t know what these careers are really like, and for most of us IT was equal to coding.

How did your story begin in Networking?
For me, one of the most important things that the university can offer is the community. You constantly hear about new domains, courses and careers through the university’s platform. That’s how I found out about Networking. The university program didn’t focus on this in the first two years, but I took an external CCNA course, and I obtained my certification in a one-year span.
Since I really enjoyed Networking, I started taking small, yet decisive steps towards a career in this field. First, I wrote my bachelor’s degree thesis on a Networking topic. Next, I wanted my first job to be in Networking and didn’t make any compromises. The master’s program and my thesis were both Networking oriented, and during my master’s degree I also started working at Cegeka.

Tell us about your day-to-day activity.
I’m part of the Operations team inside the Networking team. Our work is split into two major parts. On one hand, we analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve all the incidents and problems from our customers’ environment. This means resolving alerts reported by the monitoring system or resolving flaws that we or our customers find. On the other hand, we make constant improvements in these environments because threats evolve alongside the security measures, so you always have to be alert.

I'm grateful that I have a great relationship with my team. This is so important, as it affects both your performance & your state of mind.

What do you like the most about your job?
Our clients are from sectors such as finance, transportation, and healthcare, so each one comes with specific requirements and needs. I can’t really get bored, because I can always go for something that I’ve never done before. I love this diversity in clients’ environments. This means we work with a wide range of solutions, devices, and vendors. There are many technologies, but you don’t have to master them all, you can choose the ones you want to focus on. For example, I chose Palo Alto and Cisco routing and switching.

If you could send a message to yourself from 3 years ago, what would you say?

Since you’re at the start of your career, it’s normal to find every day something that you didn’t know about Networking. You might even feel like you actually don’t know anything, and you must speed up the process, but putting too much pressure on yourself will exhaust you, so take it easy.
When we start learning a new technology or studying for a new certification, we usually focus on reaching our objective as fast as possible, while the most efficient and healthy way is clear, but requires more time. Try to keep a constant pace – you don’t have to reach all your objectives right now, you have time.

Cegeka is your second job. Tell us about your experience so far.
Indeed, Cegeka is my second job, and I came here less than 2 years into my previous job. At that time, I was reluctant to pursue this opportunity, as I wasn’t sure I was prepared. However, sometimes you just need a little push and that’s exactly what happened when one of my friends recommended me here.
Before joining the company, I wanted to know what the atmosphere is like, especially in the Networking team. My friend told me that everyone is nice and eager to help. After two years here, I can confirm this – Cegeka offers a healthy environment which suits me. Joining Cegeka proved to be the best decision! I’m grateful that I have a great relationship with all my colleagues. I think this is the most important aspect when you work in a team, as it affects both your state of mind and your performance.

How do you envision your career path and future in Cegeka?
There are a lot of opportunities in Cegeka and as time passes, I see my spectrum widening here. Everyone is open to guide you and find out what you want, instead of putting up obstacles. I don’t focus on the process, but on opportunities. For me, the most important aspect is to keep developing, while also helping the company achieve its objectives.
